Solo Performance with Orchestra
The opportunity to solo with an orchestra is often restricted to students who have won a competition, but our program is intended to provide this experience and training for students at all ages and ability levels. This is our signature program, one that has been in constant development for over a decade. It offers students a rare opportunity to prepare and perform a solo work together with our festival orchestra over the course of an entire week, in an environment that provides exceptional support and musical development individually customized to each young musician. We collaborate with each student's private instructor to ensure a comprehensive and collaborative experience.
There are two different Solo Performance with Orchestra programs available:
Advanced Program students can elect to attend as boarders or day participants, and enjoy a two-week immersive program that runs from Monday, June 26, 2023 through Saturday, July 8, 2023 that includes daily private lessons, workshops, technique classes, performance classes, collaborative piano rehearsal coaching, and sonata training the first week, followed by daily work with the festival orchestral principals and rehearsals with the full festival orchestra the second week, culminating in a formal concert at the end of the program. Students also participate in a chamber music intensive every evening. This program is designed for students in grades 6-12 who are working on the standard concerto repertoire for their instruments and may already have performance experience with solo works and/or chamber music.
Intermediate Program students attend as day participants and enjoy a one-week program that runs from Monday, July 3, 2023 through Saturday, July 8, 2023 that includes daily private lessons, technique classes, an advanced string ensemble, daily work with the festival orchestral principals and rehearsals with the full festival orchestra the second week, culminating in a formal concert at the end of the program This program is designed or students in grades 4-12 who may not yet have started on the standard concerto repertoire, and/or who may be playing a solo with an orchestra for the first time.

Violin Group Class (part of the Young Artist Program)
An ensemble component of the Young Artist Program gives students in grades K-3 a group music experience that incorporates the best practices from a wide range of early childhood music methods including Suzuki and Dalcroze, presenting age and level-appropriate engagements in technique and musicianship. We offer customized sessions for students with previous experience as well as absolute beginners. New violin students are provided an instrument to use for the entire week at no additional charge, courtesy of Wallingford's own Ute Brinkmann, violinmaker. Students enjoy a diverse range of activities designed to foster performance skills and collaboration, led by experienced instructors. The daily play-in sessions feature original symphonic backing tracks, and the students are accompanied by the festival faculty in their Friday performance.
