Solo Performance with Orchestra
The opportunity to perform a solo with an orchestra is often limited to students who have won a competition, but our program is intended to provide this experience and training for students of all ages and ability levels. This is our signature program, one that has been in constant development for over a decade. It offers students a rare opportunity to prepare and perform a solo work together with our professional festival orchestra. They engage with the orchestra principals and conductor over an entire week in an environment that provides exceptional support and musical development individually customized to each young musician. We connect with each student's private instructor leading up to the festival to ensure a comprehensive and age-appropriate experience.
Students in this five day program participate in private lessons, workshops, technique classes, performance classes, daily work with the festival orchestral principals, and chamber music, culminating in a formal concert at the end of the program accompanied by our professional festival orchestra. Each season, we accept roughly ten (10) students to participate in this component of SMF. It is a small program with lots of individual attention for each student.
This program is designed for violin, viola, and cello students of all ability levels in K-12 who are working on the standard solo repertoire for their instruments. Please see the repertoire page for suggested works by instrument. Program hours are from 9:00am-3:30pm each day.

String Academy
Drawing on the best aspects of early-childhood music programs like Suzuki and Dalcroze Eurhythmics, the String Academy offers violin, viola, and cello students a diversified experience in all aspects of music performance, practice, listening, and exploration that builds their fundamental skills for solo and ensemble playing in a supportive group class setting.
Each day, students participate in play-in sessions to review works they have already learned, participate in workshops to expand their technical skills, and collaborate through play with their instructors and peers as they develop their aural abilities, explore interesting works and composers throughout music history, and cultivate individual expression in their music-making. The cohort rehearses with custom-written accompaniments recorded by a professional orchestra, and performs on the concert accompanied by our professional festival orchestra.
This program is designed for violin, viola, and cello students who are currently working on pieces in Suzuki Method Books 1, 2, and 3, or equivalent. Program hours are from 9:00am-12:00pm each day.
